Newcomer here. I had 6+6 playable characters on 2 servers. I was supprised to experience downtime and now they have “merged” my characters, so I have 6 playable and 6 locked inside “universal storage”!?
Is this how this game works - daylong downtimes after which, half of a player’s characters are unplayable?

What you think you were going to get 6 free character slot unlocks. The article explains how the universal character storage works.

You dont need them.
You can move characters from Slots to Universal Storage and bring them from Universal Storage to Slots.
You just have to make rotations to play them all, and taking care the six first characters who pick up gold from a raid or similar activity, would be the marked to get gold*
*If you mark 6 characters but move any of them to universal storage before getting gold with it, they will become unmarked, so be careful with that.
Another thing you have to take into account is if you are doing Training in the Stronghold. If you move a character who is doing Training to the Universal Storage, he will stop inmediately the Training without warning you.
The Characters in Universal Storage accumulates Rest Bonus, so you will can rotate between the slots of the game to play them all.
If you have any doubt about Characters & Storage after server merging, dont doubt in ask.

The universal character storage is current situation. They are likely not going to allow those chars being kept forever. Expect them to eventually expire so you will have to choose which to keep. Now I don’t know this for certain, but that’s what someone said about how it worked in RU. You see the game displays expire date on them. It’s currently none, but why would it have if not to eventually have an date there.
OP got unlucky for actively playing on two particular servers that merged. I created 6 new chars on mine, which I will probably transition some of my alts to, and I expect the rest I will need to abandon at some time.
Universal Character Storage can permanently store characters, and you will be able to move your characters in and out of this storage space freely.

Yes I have read that. I believed that because the word permanently is very explicit, even kinda when someone said in RU they expired. However when I saw the characters to display the text about expiring, I stopped believing it.
All I can do is make myself a fool and repeat myself.
Don’t trust it. Expect the extra characters to be gone at some point.

The Question is, is there any proof, pic or video about the “someone says in RU server”?
Because without proof, “Someone says in Iceland, Lost Ark gonna be closed in one month” , you know?
Seems logic to expect the extra characters gone in some point, but without proof, and taking into account the regions have different instances of the game, that are evolving at their own way, “Anything can happen Thursday!”
For example we dont have the Free Pheons Fiesta they have in RU server, or other cool things to easy some problems RU has.
So till that moment and till we have any proof they could or would want to change the “permanent” word in our Regions, it will be valid.
And if they changes, probably you will have enough time to buy slots if you want and move your favourite new alts to Character Slots.
Does it matter to you? It does matter to me and probably to many others, who I warned. Nothing else to say.

only thing is if you empty your universal storage is it most likely goes away so as long as you keep one in there your golden. And if they do slap a timer on it that will have to notify on it.
there’s also a disclaimed that clearly states if you don’t clear it out by the end of the timer there gone

I come from other f2p games, where they ingame share warnings/links to external news about maintenance times, changes etc.
This is my first game in many years that without ingame warning days ahead just shuts down for 8 hours and lock half of my chars.
They really should link important news in game on first daily log in IMO.
It was my expectation they did that.
I know I COULD have search for forums ahead of playing the game, but…
I actually tried to get most of the experience, without reading forums or guides about power leveling, etc. - which might spoil story and first experience for myself.
That end game grinding part usually comes in short time in most games anyway.

Zeals had mentioned on one of his streams that even after a server merge even if you have
expansion slots your loose all of that and your back at 6 chars. You will haft to buy the expansion tickets all over again, weather or not that changed idk.
You dont have to buy the tickets. If you bought before, they will stay in your storage to use it again.
Character slots will reset to the default 6. Additional character slots that have been purchased will be returned to the player as Character Slot Extension Tickets.
