What about a temporary box fee? You charge $15 when a player makes a new account and if the account is still in good standing a month later you refund the money or give a special promotion to convert to blue crystals at a favourable rate (one-time only, of course).
Sadly would not work. Suppose the bot was able to make a profit of over $15 before getting banned. Then it would still be profitable to make a bot. Other MMORPGs have a monthly fee and they all contain bots as well.
Who says they make $15? Of course it would become part of their profit calculation but it would at least require some upfront cash investment from the botting companies and they would have to think long and hard before starting 500k new accounts. What if they spend the money and all of a sudden AGS/Smilgate comes up with a long term solution to ban them before they can make any money at all?
Right now there is zero risk to starting accounts. This would at least solve that issue while keeping the game free-to-play.
It’s also simple to implement and would require almost no development time. Along with locking servers it could buy time for AGS and SG to find a longer term solution.
This makes the assumption the bots companies are not creating accounts for future use. They could have (and likely do have) millions of accounts already created ready to spin up when needed.
Eh. They really should just make the Royal Crystal → Gold conversion rate match RMT websites. People that whale will just whale in game vs RMT and forcing a $15 charge to everybody even the ones that are purely F2p and don’t wanna spend money is not a good move.
I’m sure AGS/SG are worried (and rightfully so) about a race to the bottom on pricing. I don’t really think reducing the price is going to do anything other than cut everyone’s profit since there’s likely a ton of margin in the current pricing and the bot companies would surely just reduce their prices further.
The $15 charge would be fully refundable and would be accompanied by a one-time favourable conversion rate into blue crystals to compensate. It’s a pretty minor charge and I don’t think it would detract many players for trying the game out.
Again, this would be temporary along with locking servers while AGS and SG look for a longer term solution.
AGS/SG don’t care about losing profits. If they really were, they would’ve done something with the bots now since they’re losing profits from bots and RMT companies
