I just hit 1370, got my demonic impulse and adrenaline (under the engraving tab) to max lvl 3 but when I go to the Gear tab and highlight either one of those engravings, how come it doesn’t show any highlighted bonuses? I have those gear engraving books up to purple (no legendary books yet). Do these not show bonuses on the gear page until I have learned the legendary books?

… So, you need to equip them into the two slots on your gear tab and/or get them from gear for them to actually work. The books just upgrade how much a slot of the gear tab being filled with them gets you. (+3 per rank. So purple rank is +9, and it’s +5 per rank of effect.)
At least that SOUNDS like the issue here.
Edit: the only other possibility that comes to mind is that the tooltips simply don’t work that way, if you want to see the bonuses you need to check the engravings page. (and even then you won’t get current values, like how much you get out of Raid Captain.)
This is not only a thing for class engravings, but for (seemingly) every other engraving as well.
It shows the current effect when viewing it under “Engravings”, but under the “Gear” tab it’s all dark.
The Engraving tab shows status of all engravings on your character.
All those blue and red pips are whats applied to you currently.
And then the levels 1/2/3 are what decides applied bonus’/penalty.
Only the 2 engravings you equip will be active. So each character needs to pick two.
Yes, if you have legendary engraving books, you don’t have to spend as much on accessories to max out the engraving and can instead upgrade additional engravings with those accessories. Ideally you want to reserve these if you plan on using them on multiple characters (because it’ll be more valuable that way).
For now, you just need a 6/6 stone to be able to achieve 4x3 engravings with all legendary accessories that have +3/+3 so no need for legendary books
In the future (at 1415+) with relic accessories, having legendary engraving books will enable you to get 5x3 with ease but it’s not mandatory
4x3 plus lvl 1 is fine even then.
Also, when buying legendary engravings - I would evaluate the cost vs the benefit of using this engraving on multiple characters (the alternative being accessories being more expensive on your alts) - so I would personally only go for grudge / cursed doll legendary in the long run since you use those on most dps classes
When Preemptive Strike got down to around 850 a book for legendary, I bothered to buy it up. Because it’s basically BiS for Chaos no matter the class and being able to cut a +3 Preemptive stone is easy at each tier. So I figured ‘You know what? This is worth it.’
No regrets, but there’s not a lot that are nearly full universal like that. Grudge, Cursed Doll, Hit Master (A lot of ranged classes qualify to use it.) Adrenaline and maybe Ambush Master. Expert if you play support, but Expert is priced like it’s Grudge without a drawback so that’s not likely to happen for a long time.
