Hello,
I am posting this in hopes the Devs can track down and eliminate the bug that is causing the problem.
First let me say, Im OCD, and part of that is why I did all this testing and research instead of just saying “I’ll wait for another update” or simply using what I found works below.
My problem(s) (seems similar to others):
Loging in, sometimes crash just after getting through the que.
Playing, sometimes crash when instancing
Playing sometimes crash short after instancing
Playing sometimes crash what appears to be randomly
The Crash for me is always the same, suddenly all my monitors turn black and my GPU spins to full.
Initially I thought this a hardware issue like my GPU was overheating, or Motherboard starting to go out, or… insert hardware issue here. I will outline my test later. Then I thought maybe a bad install, or possibly Windows 11, or possibly a conflict somewhere. Nope i will outline this later as well.
I do believe I have found the “area” in which this can be reliably replicated, and some ways (albeit not great) to get around it.
First of all here is the situation and my test method:
I have 2 similar computers with only minor hardware difference and a laptop that is also very simlar in spec and capabilites. The work I do for a living makes it so I need an immediate backup as waiting for a failed component is not possible and could be detrimental to the projects I handle.
Computer 1:
AMD 3950x Liquid cooled NZXT Kraken
Gigabyte 2080super 8gb rev2.0
MSI Godlike x570
128gb ddr 3600
NVME main drive gen4, 7 ssd harddrives
1200watt thermaltake gold PSU
2x 4k display (1 120hz 1 60hz)
1x 2k display (60hz portrait mode)
Computer 2:
AMD 3900x aircooled Coolermaster heatpipe
Gigabyte 2080 8gb OC
MSI Tomahawk x570
64gb ddr 3200
NVME Main drive gen3, 2 ssd harddrives
1050watt Corsair PSU
(same monitors)
Laptop:
Intel i7-10750
RTX 2080 Maxq
15inch 4k monitor
32gb ddr 3200
nvme main drive gen3, 1 ssd hardrive
The problem occurs on all 3 machines. And the consistent factor is 4k resolution.
This problem arose after last maintenance. First crash happened a split second after getting through the 12,000 person que
Crashing occured at irregular intervals and always crashed the same way. Blank screens, fan speed full.
Hotfix came in, and changed nothing.
First I updated everything. All bios, all firmware, all software.
Same problem.
Then I ran integrity check: Same crash
then I reinstalled: Same Crash
Then I reinstalled and ran integrity check: Same crash
Then I disabled all overlays and did integrity check: Same Crash
I began testing thinking it my system. Could not get the crash to occur in any other games.
Games tested (all at max settings), all through steam:
No Mans Sky, Doom Eternal, FFXIV, Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order, Destiny2, Guardians of the Galaxy, Mutan year zero, Planetside 2, Pub G
Games tested (all max settings, Epic Store: Cyberpunk, Borderlands3, Alien Isolation, Insurmountable, Outer Worlds.
No Crashes in 4k.
So I thought I’d start eliminating background tasks including all LED management (thinking I used to have the LED Keeper bug), all chat apps (discord, slack, etc), all creative cloud, etc.
Problem still exists.
Starting running all monitoring apps: Windows, Gigabyte aorus engine, nzxt cam. Monitored GPU & CPU, Voltage, memory use, clock frequency, fan speeds, temperatures, frame rates…
All stable, peak temps never above 60. Crash persists.
Also, I do not overclock unless its factory.
Started messing with ingame settings, one by one… no bloom, no flare, no distorion, all setting High, Medium, low
Crash persists.
Frame rate limiting, crash persists. Max fan speeds, crash persists. Everything except keyboard & mouse disconnected (thinking power use?), Crash persists.
then I started changing the resolution every setting except in 4k, no crash. Soon as I go 4k: crashes return.
4k is the only thing that this crash happens under, regardles of quality settings, and it is only lost ark that crashes.
So I then went to see if the other machines would have the same problem. They do.
4k, crashes lost ark on 2080s, windows 11, NVME OS drive, SSD Game drive.
Now I get it, maybe its just me. Maybe its some other setting that I have consistent across all my devices. I for the life of me cannot figure it out, unless its somehow related to Starlink, which is my internet.
Hope this helps, look forward to playing in native resolution again some day.
