FFXIV has a materia faceting system where you can attempt to facet a materia to a piece of gear based on a certain %. You can use up as many materia as possible until the faceting is successful. You could get lucky and use only 1 or get unlucky and have to use 15 just to facet it.
I think something like this should be added to the honing system so we don’t have to sit there for 10 minutes clicking over and over when it inevitably fails 10 times in a row. You would select the option to “batch hone” and you can then choose to what +x you want to attempt to. To prevent you from using up all of your materials at once, you could set the max number of which material you want used up. For example, you have 200 Great Honor Leapstones but you don’t want to use any more than 50. You’d get the limit to 50 and the other materials would be limited as well based on how much is required per hone.
I think this would alleviate the burnout we get from honing and make the process much faster.
EDIT: I thought about this some more and came up with another way to do it. After each hone, it would ask if you’d like to continue and tell you what materials would be used if you attempt again. It won’t be automatic but it’ll be much faster with fewer clicks. Just another idea.
I also think that when honing is a 100% chance, you should be able to complete the whole thing with one click.
Also, there’s really no need to make charging it with shards a separate thing, just make that part of the cost the first time. Nobody ever charges gear half-way with shards, it’s kinda silly.
Yeah FFXIV introduced the mechanic after we had to fail and spend time failing multiple times trying to fit a 3% sucess rate materia into a slot.
My suggestion is to use an approach similar to what is used to craft items. You have a slider that you can adjust the number of attempts. If it gets trough to the next lvl, it automatically stops the honing.
