Welcome to the internet, people are dicks
This is untrue - FFXIV does a wonderful job of maintaining a welcoming chat. It’s true that there are a lot of toxic communities on the internet, but it isn’t something that we necessarily have to accept. You’re right that Amazon prolly don’t care enough to address it, but that doesn’t mean that it’s foolish to hold them to a higher standard.
Antares is pretty awful, I’m on there as well. I just keep area chat off entirely. Thankfully I have a group of people to play with already, because otherwise it would feel very isolating. I wish you luck, OP!
I play FFXIV as well, and honestly it feels the same. Same with WoW, ESO, GW2. People are all the same.
So…you are saying that chat being this way is the norm in other MMOs?
You don’t need to moderate every chat line if you properly punish bad actors (and encourage reporters) by making good use of the report system.
Besides, we’re in 2022 – automated content flagging has been a mainstream thing for about half a decade now.
I’v been playing since release and area chat has nothing but a language war and people going at each other throats. I am not exaggerating this, its been this way everyday since then.
EDIT: Perhaps adding language tags to channels could help?
No i am on a different server and it is the same. The topic has not changed for an entire week. It is always racism, insults, or disgusting comments. Hands down the worst i have seen for years. I turn on area chat and ONE SECOND later something inappropriate shows up. In my server we have australians and americans insulting each other 24/7 as well.
Yep, we’re in the same boat however its english and french. apparently it’s the “official” french server somehow? I don’t get how all of this was left for the community to decide upon choosing to “claim” that this server is x language and anything else gets you nuked with insults and general degeneracy.
FFXIV has a subscription and expansion paywall. There’s no comparison in terms of the audiences. This game would need to not be F2P for their to be any hope of a better chat.
Either turn off the chat completely or do not follow global chat. Problem solved.
The FFXIV free trial gives access to the base game and first expansion - hundreds of hours of content. The only limitation those players have in chat is that they cannot yell, shout or send tells. They can still talk in local chat, which is the most popular channel in most of the cities.
The problem can be solved with moderation if a company wants to invest in it.
People saying ‘turn off chat’ are effectively saying it’s OK for the game to have a toxic community and people to be a racist / homophobic / aggressive pieces of crap without consequence. This isn’t about people being thin or thick skinned, it’s just about people not being toxic to each other, and making an environment suitable for all.
Heres an idea: Ignore them. Dont group with em. Don’t interact with them. They want a reaction.
Fair point. I’m so used to playing f2p MMOs that I forget FFXIV isn’t one, and consequently has far more financial resources to pull from, haha.
Agreed. I’d volunteer myself as well if any openings.
It’s not necessarily about being a snowflake. My nephew got a whisper from a person who found his “handsome sir” toon attractive, I guess, and who offered his companionship as a “subby femboy.” There isn’t anything overtly offensive about this except that my nephew is 15, which is under the age of consent for the country we play in (he’s playing according to Amazon ToU, as we do keep an eye on his chat - for exactly this reason). He keeps area chat off, but whispers are on so that we can play together. He blocked the dude and I think reported him as well, but he was a little surprised by the brazen approach.
It’s just… it’s a lot sometimes, you know?
If wanting to rid the world (and yes, digital landscapes where real people are interacting with each other is included in ‘the world’) of bigotry and ignorance one chip at a time makes me a snowflake then I’ll be one proudly.
This is a guild currently on Zinnervale and it appears when you search “LGBT”. It isn’t just limited to chat. I’d hate to be someone struggling with/potentially ashamed of their identity or a teen recently discovering who they are looking for a place they won’t feel like an outsider and stumbling across that.
This shit needs to be treated more seriously with harsher consequences.
Sure and I understand your case. But people still should get emotionally stronger. This reflects too much to IRL. You can not say anything nowadays, because people are feeling touched and demanding “justice”. Like wtf is wrong with this woke age. Yes, it might be rude, yes it might be absolutely innapropriate, but it is still some kind of expression or opinion… yes, embarrasing, but who cares… just block him and let him live his stupid life in his stupid bubble.
I understand that and I largely agree with you. But out in the real world it gets diluted by other people chipping in to the conversation and/or offering different perspectives/pushback/etc, whereas in the area chat in-game it’s extremely concentrated - because all of the other people have turned it off and stopped participating. So now it’s overwhelmingly toxic, which is unfortunate if you’re trying to coordinate finding/taking out a map boss.
According to my previous experience with LA… I was never able to use ingame chat for this purpose, from whatever reason… it was too fast, too small, confusing, whatever… Therefore minimazing whole chat window is really not a big deal. Me personally, I am active only in separated guild and party channels, cuz that is what am I interested in. Can not be bothered by that bs in global.
Discord is the best option.
Sure there will never be change something with that attitude.
