It’s part of the game currently, but it is not a core aspect of the game. You could remove it entirely for a different progression system and the actual game would remain unchanged. From what I’ve heard they changed it once to this toxic, predatory version of the honing system. They can change it again if they’re convinced it would be better for their bottom line to do so.

Game is great. Honing system is shit. Not sure how many times I have to repeat this. I’m not one to throw away an entire apple just because there’s a soft spot. Why would I quit a game that I enjoy nearly all the core gameplay of just because of one awful-but-easily-changeable system?

Sure you can. It’s one of the least consequential systems in the game to change. SG just needs to believe that making the western version friendly towards players, instead of toxic towards them, will improve their bottom line.
I almost feel sorry for people like you, you’ve completely convinced yourself that the upgrading system thats been in the game for a long time is gonna get changed over 2 months of people upset, when RNG upgrading systems are nothing new

5k fuck rng lol. i much prefer concrete goals, i understand OP is saying that the pity is the concrete goal, but players can have wildly different outcomes and progression timelines with the same time invested, and that’s not very concrete. In WoW it felt terrible when you didnt get tier or that trinket you needed forever, but they’ve could have vendor systems where you earn a currency from same content that can buy BiS and it would be solved. Most MMO’s having bad systems currently doesn’t mean I don’t like MMO’s, it simply means i want deterministic outcomes in those MMO’s. Don’t hate the game just the rng.
Also PS they dont have the same system for early progression in korea RN so… if its so great why did they largely remove rng in getting to legoin raids? i mean smilegate themselves said eliminating huge chunks of rng systems progression improved retention lolol.

Took me a minute to even realize what you were talking about with this, because I haven’t been abused by game developers to such a degree that not only have I experienced “backwards progression” but I actually have a cute little term for it. Making the case for honing in Lost Ark not being toxic because an even more toxic, fetid shitpile of a concept like backwards progression exists in some other, wildly degenerate Korean games, is not the ironclad defense you think it is. All it means is that Korean devs range from horrifyingly predatory to cataclysmically predatory.
So many times we, here in the West, we hoped for a decent korean game.
Every korean mmo launched in the West failed: Tera Online, Vindictus, Bless Online (so failed that they shut down the game after a few months after launch), Black Desert, Blade and Soul and many more.
Not even one korean game managed to have success in West. Why? Because of the “heavy grind” and “gambling” mentality. All korean games share these two core game concept. They can’t understand that our western “gamers mentality” is totally different and opposite from eastern “gamers mentality”.
At least we saw, we tried and now we move onwards (another game).

The problem with this system is in geenral how it works, you need what 6 materials to hone, silver, gold, shards, leapstones, stones, fusion material … and lets add another 1 luck, i am ok with all that if it was made fair, once you reach a certain upgrade lvl ( lets say 15% or 30% ) witch each fail you increase your % success and based on that % succes your artisan increase right, the % succes goes up to double so for example from 15% you can go only up to 30% and it stopes there and the % artisan is based on that 30% … the fact that it caps at double the initial % chance means you stop gaining more artisan per each fail and just get a fixed % chance meaning it takes longer and longer and longer each time your initialy % goes down, while also increasing the costs more and more and more… overall yes, the system is a big money grab and for me each time i get a success, even if its a 1 tap i dont feel wow amazing , i feel more like “ow thank god” i dont have to waste more materials on this upgrade. Yea game has alot of stuff going to it, everything except the guaranteed stuff is rng, you wana do sea bounties, well hope you are lucky and get the drops from boses, island souls are the same, want to farm masterpiece, hope you lucky with the drops, ignea tokens ( anyone still farming like madmen the rng drops for food ? ) this game should be called Lost RNG as it is the most RNG game out there. some games have indeed rng … for collectable non important stuff is where most of it is in, not the MAIN PROGRESS of the game. Also , lets call it as it is, the items that increase your chance , why do they lower the % each upgrade? thats another sitty system where you can only double your initial %. I would of been ok if this game had less stuff required for a single try to hone and keep the chances the same, remove the stuff like gold, silver and keep the farmable stuff in, dont add stuff that depend on more RNG. You can even keep the silver cost, but the gold cost is just more rng, are you lucky to get a trinket that sells? or that nice drops from unas tokens so you can continu upgrading? I wasted about 40k gold on honing just to get 5 pity in a row… and yes i said waste because i could of used that gold to get better trinkets or buy engravings or other usefull stuff, but i have to save it because ya know honing costs a ton of gold. This honing system does not respect your time at all, because most of your time in this game will be stuck on the honing. You want to do day 1 content… well you cant cause you pitied so much yet still behind cause you dont have the mats… you want more mats … make alts and spend time with them so you can send resources to your main to be able to play on current content with your friends that were lucky because compared to you that pitied mot of your upgrades they 1 tapped most of theirs … when you block players from accessing current content behind either being lucky or having multiple alts to farm so you can get more tries, thats not a fair system, thats a FARM system that doesnt respect your time. Ye you can waste most of your times doing random stuff. But in the end, in this game its all about honing cause thats the goal, at 1 point you will have everything in the game and still be stuck from accessing content behind honing. But you can always swipe and get that up also if you DONT HAVE THE TIME to farm multiple alts.
