I’ve only seen threads about pvp matchmaking pre-ranked, so figured I’d make a post-ranked one.
Matchmaking is completely ruining any enjoyment ranked pvp has. In particular, the “support gap” that happens every other game. What I mean are games of either ‘1 support vs 0 support’ or even worse, ‘2 supports vs 0 supports’, so the team with the supports automatically have a 90% better chance of winning because of how strong supports are.
I see absolutely no reason that ‘2 support vs 0 support’ should even exist in a matchmaking system where support is so important. The game is literally putting 2 supports in the same game, but then going “hmm, lets put both on the same team instead of balancing the teams”. This should be the easiest thing in the world to hotfix.
Now the big question “how often does that even happen? There aren’t that many support players” - I will use anecdotal evidence of my games today specifically. In my first 5 games, 3 of those games were 2 vs 0 supports. I thought about putting ranked down for the day at that point, but decided to keep on. In my next 10 games, 2 vs 0 supports happened 2 more times and 1 vs 0 supports happened about 5 more times. That means of 15 games played, only 5 of them were balanced. Getting a balanced game every 1/3 games sucks. Unbalanced games are boring for both sides.
My suggestion to solve the whole issue would be to put supports in a special queue where they can only find games with at least 1 other support and then they are placed on opposite teams.
An honorable mention to the other issue with the matchmaking – i’d imagine most people will agree that they would rather wait longer in queue for a quality game of players around their rank rather than be thrown into a vastly unbalanced MMR game. There is no reason that a rank 1 GM player should be put into the same game as Timmy on his 2nd pvp game ever. It isn’t fun for either side. If you want proof of this happening, you can watch one of the GM streamers for about 15 minutes and it’ll usually happen at least once.
