Server Language Wars | What a Mess

What if ppl from a not English speacking language dsnt speack english?

This “thing” u wanna impelement, is RACIST. EU IS NOT A COUNTRY. EVERY COUNTRY HAS HIS OWN LANGUAGE.

This not a justification at all, I’m saying that few of you take for granted that english is spoken by everyone in europe. It is not, no matter how many in your social circle do, it is factually incorrect: barely half think they can hold a conversation in english at all, that’s just how the situation is.

The media, finance and scientific community use english by pragmatism, but those groups do not represent the majority in any country.

Now the only global chat being an international group with mandatory english will just alienate the multitude of groups who don’t master english, you give a global chat per language and one international where everything goes.

to [Xakery]: The global chat is not adressed to you exclusively, if you get offended by people talking to eachother in another language it’s your problem, you call the cops on tourist speaking foreign between them in the street ?

Im sure you mean europe, not EU.

Read the first line carefully (native!). Im english aint my native langauge. They are just a small part.
In a lot of countries english is mandetory to learn as 2nd language in school.
English is the internet language.

Anyway I’ve said multible times, they need to make global chats for most common language since they failed making some server with language tags (Amazing that amazon didnt learn anything from New World). Even Riot has failed somewhat on that part too.

I understand it can’t be fun and frustrating reading through chat with mostly a uncommon language that you cant read or understand.

“Happy” for you.

I write a very long responce then changed my mind to not argue since I don’t believe I can defeat some stubborns on this subject. 99% they’ll just keep talking german-spanish etc to make people annoyed on purpose. If it was exclusive to me I would still choose English for global chat because most of the people out there can understand what’s going on at the chat and participate in the conversation this way. But it’s not exclusive as you said and if it’s not exclusive then you can’t claim servers for other languages so they don’t become exclusive. (I’m not a subject of any English speaking community btw. Still I choose to speak English in general chat you know.)
Anyways I hope they can implement that chat filter they are talking about in near future.

Yes and read the wikipedia article, it’s 51% who can hold a conversation in english.

Now unless we get the statistics on the english proficiency of Lost Ark player no one can say for sure that english is shared among everyone.

English being the language of the Internet ?

63% of the content and 25% of the users. So it is wildly used but it is not +90% like some would think.

Now lost ark is not an internet page, it a product “sold” with each individual european country in accordance to local laws (game is not in belgium for example). So this is not content based in Korea accessible from everywhere on their terms but a game distributed with localization.

There is no jurisprudence yet but if I can get the game on the french steam store page, in french with a french term and agreements but then denied to speak french in the only global chat, it could be a legal problem and definitely a cultural one.

have you seen the yellow speech bubble in the top left? guess what there you can make global chat channels in any language you want. There is no excuse to use your own native language in the chat marked with en in the same window you type in. true it amazons fault for not making them by default but its not ok to blame or be entitled or arrogant like many are about speaking their native language or bragging about how they own the server.

I do not condone anyone claiming the server, I talk a lot about english but it goes the same for any language.

Not at all - if you would reread what I wrote, I said that I’m not putting in the same basket those who can’t speak English and those who can and refuse to do it.
I am however pointing out that this doesn’t give them a free pass to use the zonechat for their national guildchat. Asking for a guild (or advertising one), asking for help, looking for parties, ect. is all understandable in whichever language you write. That way those who can’t speak in English can find appropriate groups of people who can talk to them in the languages that they can speak - which means, they would still end up being understood and talked to by people who understands them. It wouldn’t be any different for them compared to right now (talking in zone chat), however, the difference would be noticeable for everyone else, since the zonechat wouldn’t end up being spammed with a language that only a minority understands. It’s what most players tend to do anyway (forming guilds, talk on discords, whispering, ect. )
And in regards to being alienated - Everyone has the same option, opportunity and equal grounds to learn English online (as I stated above, I learnt English by playing games and learnt Italian and German by watching cartoons when I was little). You might have noticed either in this thread or some others, that when a person apologizes for not speaking English that well, people tend to tell them that it’s fine and to not worry about it since they are still being understood (Because many of us have been there before).
Nobody expects from others to speak perfectly and to not make any mistakes.
And I’m sure everyone on the internet knows the most basic of the basics with which they could communicate with everyone in an international field… heck, my 63 yo mother discovered Internet a few years ago and went from barely understanding a few words to reading articles and writing messages at ease. It all comes down to being open to it instead of automatically reject any kind of change due to mere prejudices and principles.

I’m not sure how they intend to implement the filters, but I don’t think their intent is to prevent people from talking in other languages.
It will probably be just an upgraded version of what we have now in terms of the Chat tab settings (right now we have normal, Area, Whisper, party, emotes, Guild, raid and lobby) with which we can filter the types of messages we want to see in specific tabs.

Edit: the wiki link you keep adding to your messages doesn’t mention the statistics (51% of people can hold the conversation in Englsih) you mentioned - can you be more specific about the link (possibly with a quote).

Edit2: I found the 51% you were talking about (I was looking at the 2nd link, while the 51% were mentioned in the first one) and checked the sources.

I checked 2 things. First of all, the survey (not an actual accurate source of info) from which they pulled those % from was removed.
And secondly, The survey was from 2006. For the last 16 years people, older generations (who didn’t grow with the internet and were in most cases very limited in regards to foreign languages, since most people didn’t need to know more than theirs) were being replaced with the young generations that are not only being taught English in school, but they also tend to communicate in it, since Internet is MUCH MORE commonly used as it was before.
I’ll try to find a more recent info about this and post it here.

Going to quote my edit2 from the previous post for reference

Bare in mind that the statistics shown in the above link also includes babies and young children as well people above 70.

Static is pretty useless as it takes all ages, pretty comon knownledge the old french and germans dont speak english at all, just saying.
Also a german version. That is what really pisses me off.
Everyone except apperantly amazon didnt see this problem coming.

Fair enough let’s use your more recent source:

So 370 millions out of 748 millions ( Population of Europe (2022) - Worldometer ) so 49.47 % it’s getting better but it didn’t change that much in 16y.

Now average stats don’t take into account geographical repartition, social and economical class repartitions etc. Young people are indeed certainly more used to internet, but internet is enormous, I could stay on site in my native language and never see the end of it.

This isn’t realy relevant to the game anyway, just I want to please make all of you consider that everyone does not in fact master english as much as you would think. I used to take english for granted myself then went for a formation in a technical school, coming from a good semi-private high school and that was a culture shock. There is a lot of young people still watching tv, never learning another language confing them to local culture. I would never met them if I keep myself to my discords group and social circles.
Now my situation is in eastern france (39% on the map) and switzerland, arguably less here as 4 officials language confront everyone to language problems more often.

It’s actually more than 49,47% (again you’re comparing different stats). The first number talks about the EU, your number counts all Europeans. Let me quote the first sentence of the article you took the above image, the same exact sentence in which you found the numbers of people speaking English:
“You won’t have to go far to find an English speaking country in Europe as there are over 370 million English speakers out of about 450 million EU residents”
Either it’s 370:450 or, if you want to compare the numbers of the overall European population, you’ll have to find a valid stat to compare it with.
I hope that you are aware that Russia is part of the equation as well.
With only 6% of people out of 145,934,462 (20% of the whole European population) talking English. It goes without saying that they are dropping the rate significaly.
Now, if you would want to be very accurate about this, you could take away Russia as well as all the other European countries that can’t play LA for legal reasons yet and you might find a bit of a different number.
All of that, plus the fact that I mentioned above (with people of all ages and statuses) changes the perception quite a bit.
With the internet being so widely spread and part of our everydays life, blaming your education system for not being able to speak English is, simply put, pathethic. People are learning languages either through courses, or, even better, by putting themselves out there. Which yes, at the beginning is hard to start (lots of us were there), but it gets easier (exponentially) as you progress. I’d understand the language barrier being an issue for an old person (not because he couldn’t learn a new one in time, but rather because they wouldn’t find it important enough to do so, as they won’t benefit from it in the way younger generations do), but seeing younger people refusing to learn it …
Again, thanks god for the filter.

The pic shows the european continent (Switzerland, Russia and England is on) and doesn’t specify EU in the number.

I am not blaming the education system, I am talking social upbinging (schools are adamant that a second language is important nowadays). I met people in technical school that I would never met in my social circle because of social culture, interests and money.
People that have no immediate need for english, their parents don’t know it either, why would they want to learn, let alone pay for course and travel expenses ? They don’t even know what they miss, so it’s just not a priority.

The picture shows the European continent, yet the stats that you used to calculate your % were from the sentence where it’s clearly stated EU citizens.
The picture doesn’t include the 49% you mentioned, neither does include the sum of all the English speakers -it does however mention that OVER 370mio Europeans can hold a conversation.
You got that specific info from that sentence, quoting the whole thing now: " You won’t have to go far to find an English speaking country in Europe as there are over 370 million English speakers out of about 450 million EU residents". EU residents, not Europeans.
The numbers to get the accurate rate are right there. 370mio:450mio
Don’t argue against facts brought up by the statistics itself, just because you want to be right… come on.

Agree about server tags. This way you will know what you getting there. On other hand it is the same if you do some research before head.

And about thus “warriors”, just ignore or block them. There is really nothing you can do about it.
AGS also can’t, because if they do wrong step they will be called straight away as racists of any kind. Probably it is why they aren’t putting tags as well. Dunno.

It’s funny how many people got “offended” by your post saying that people who think like this are “racists”. Won’t even go into racism discussion, that’s a deadend. Just let them speak whatever the fluff language they want, the only thing that this post is about is the following:

People who speak any non-english language in Area chat are free to do so but they are ruining the experience of some other people who don’t speak their language. I consider it rude, but it’s just my personal opinion, I won’t burn you at the stake or anything, I will just enjoy the game slightly less. :peace_symbol:

Thanks for your answer and neutral discussion. Just saying: “Excuses” I don’t say people use it as an Excuse, at all. Which you build your answer towards. Fair enough to tell it, if you have this experience from somewhere, but this was not my words to this effect. Also I don’t say this is how all are.

So what instead? I only wanted to give a little hint to some differences. Thus it was an example, on why people have a preference. Preference is preference let’s ignore this, but people don’t prefer saying sorry for their preference from my view - so btw: I didn’t. But there are many other reasons, of course. I slightly touched one or two.

But I don’t want to drag it out cause I don’t want to defense it neither, (I presented facing some obstacles myself). Just I want to give a second Pov for more understanding the phenomenon, which you can read about many are experiencing.

Why? Because the other views are some times missing, cause not all people are not interested to come to such threads to tell, for obvious reasons.
