Why not verify identity before allowing a player to interact with the marketplace?

Leave the barrier-to-entry the same as it is now. You can sign up for free, play the game, earn gold, etc. So potential customers aren’t turned away.

But if you want to trade or interact with the marketplace at all, you have to verify your identity.

By the time legitimate players get to this point, they won’t be turned off by this requirement. They’re already invested in the game.

There. No more bots.

Seems like a no-brainer, in my opinion.

Edit: Thank you, Xyntao, for simultaneously failing to be polite and flaunting your ignorance. Verification of identity doesn’t require that your personal information ever be stored, or even handled, by the company/service that requires the verification. Authentication flows like OAuth2 allow this to be done safely and securely.

You use this all the time without realizing it. Smart people like me implement these systems so dumb people like you don’t have to think about it.

those systems are always automated, its extremely simple to confirm accounts, unless you ask something really invasive, the solution to gold sellers is much much simpler (some options):

  • ban the buyers, but they wont do it, its a risk they wont take, this makes it risky to buy gold and most players are not willing to loose the work on their accounts by buying gold from RMT if they are going to get banned for it (wich they wont sadly)
  • run them out by competing with them, offer gold cheaper (inflation is going to happen anyway but at least the company is receiving the money)
  • restricting trade (like BDO) i really dislike this option but with fixed prices is really hard to do RMT effectively (but they still do it so its not 100% effective and a pain in the ass for players)

Some things i have seen that never work:

  • account confirmations (bots are great at account confirmations)
  • transactions confirmed by capchas (this is extremely annoying and it never works)
  • restricting market access to low level players
  • Permanent ip bans to sellers work a bit better but theese are no longer done b/c ip’s are easy to change and it has some other problems with banning places where multiple users connect

In the end there is only 2 ways to effectively get rid of them, you either remove their market (by making sure your players dont buy from them, by banning or making gold something that is superflous) or you compete with them to a price soo low in gold that they go to more profitables games

Korea doesn’t have much of a botting/hacking issue as you need a korean phone number to make accounts for korean games

I try to be as polite possible, taking in consideration what a ridiculous and stupid statement you made.
In the age of data sharing and conflicts between general population and the big tech corporations regarding this issue, you come with the most stupid idea.
Can you imagine what consequences can have if someone hacks this “playerbase identity database”? And before you say that it can’t be hacked, please stop. They hacked NSA and CIA…so trust me if someone wants, AGS database would be child’s play for them.
That would mean that hackers would have access to hundreds of thousands players ID’s, locations, phone numbers, etc. These are private informations and should not be shared just because i want yo buy a pet in a online game. Come on…
