So I boldly decided to trust the patch notes here:
Adjusted rewards drop location for Naruna Hot Springs.
And lo and behold after I kill the clown in his lsd phase he drops his loot while the cutscene teleports me out of the phase without my pet having enough time to pick up the loot.
